“Two Hundred Cars to Single Mothers from $100”
Friday, June 5th, 2009
Terry Osborne, Door of Hope Church, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia
When Terry received the $100 from his pastor, he went home and taped the money to his bathroom mirror as a reminder to pray and ask God what He wanted him to do with it. What came to him in time was a desire to provide transportation for a single mother in the local town of Launceston, Tasmania. He decided he would use his love of cars and mechanics to secure an older model vehicle, fix it up over a period of weekends into running shape, where it could be presented as a gift to the young mom. When Terry’s friends at church discovered what he intended to do, several of them volunteered to pitch in and help. They, too, enjoyed tinkering with cars, and the goal seemed like a worthwhile venture.
When they completed their assignment, they took the car to the woman’s house, presented her with the keys to the car, joined in a circle of prayer for her and her family, and invited them to come to their church. Everybody was pretty excited about the outcome of their assignment. Afterwards, Terry and his friends met together and decided that since they had such a great time rebuilding that first car, that they should keep doing it. Along the way, someone in the group applied for a grant and received $100,000 for their project! The following year, they received a second grant, this time for $300,000! Over the past three years, their initial $100 investment has grown to over $500,000 and the team has secured over 200 cars to fix and pesent to single mothers and families in their community in the name of Jesus Christ and Door of Hope Church. They call their ministry “M.A.D. Wheels” for “Making A Difference”, which is truly what they are doing
as faithful stewards of their talent, treasure, and time to advance the cause of Christ in their community. |
